Grant 2005 – Buddha’s Birthplace Home to Crane Sanctuary, Nepal

A PATA Foundation grant will enable the restoration of a crane sanctuary in Lumbini Garden, a world heritage site in western Nepal and the birthplace of Prince Siddartha (Lord Buddha).  The Lumbini Crane Sanctuary will provide a natural habitat for several threatened species of bird, including the Sarus crane, Eurasian eagle owl, gray hornbill, large gray babbler, black-shouldered kite, barn owl and the crested serpent eagle.  In addition to restoring and managing wetland habitats and educating local communities as to their importance, the project also plans to provide tourist facilities.
